The Foundational Triad: A Process for Understanding the State of Yoga
2 minute read
The world of yoga is evolving, and with it, the need for deeper inquiry into how our communities function, where power dynamics emerge, and how we can move toward more ethical and sustainable practices. In this episode of The State of Yoga Podcast, host Shelly Coffman introduces the Foundational Triad—a critical framework for understanding the state of yoga and addressing challenges within the yoga business.
Why a Process-Oriented Approach?
Episode 0 laid the foundation for using the Process Enneagram for Strategic Inquiry—a tool that helps communities self-lead and self-manage through conflict resolution. This episode builds upon that by introducing the Foundational Triad, a key element of the Enneagram’s wisdom-based approach to inquiry.
The Enneagram is more than just a personality typing system; it is a process map that can be applied to nearly anything—including understanding the dynamics within yoga communities. By using this structured approach, we can begin to ask the right questions, uncover hidden truths, and create meaningful solutions.
The Three Pillars of the Foundational Triad
At the core of the Enneagram’s structure is a triangle of three key numbers: 9, 3, and 6. These numbers form the basis of inquiry:
9 - The Current State: What is happening right now? What do we know about the present state of yoga as a practice, as a business, and as a community?
3 - Relationships: How are relationships functioning within yoga spaces? Are they built on ethical principles, or do power dynamics create harm?
6 - Information: What information do we have, and what do we still need to learn? How do we approach fact-finding in a way that leads to wisdom and integrity?
These three elements—state, relationships, and information—provide the container for all deeper exploration within the Enneagram process. Without them, we lose the ability to frame conversations effectively and move toward meaningful change.
Applying the Enneagram to the Yoga Community
The Foundational Triad is not just an abstract concept—it is a practical tool that can be applied to real-world issues in yoga communities.
Understanding the Current State: Many yoga teachers feel disillusioned by the business of yoga. Low pay, unclear leadership structures, and a lack of transparency create an environment where frustration and burnout are common.
Examining Relationships: Power struggles between teachers, studio owners, and students can create unhealthy environments. The Guru Syndrome (where teachers are idolized) and the Guru Complex (where teachers claim superiority) distort the purpose of yoga, making it about authority rather than shared learning.
Gathering the Right Information: Instead of relying on assumptions, yoga communities need structured methods for self-inquiry and decision-making. The Enneagram process offers a framework to ask the right questions and make informed, ethical choices.
A Roadmap for the Journey Ahead
This episode sets the stage for future discussions, where the podcast will explore each phase of the Process Enneagram in depth. Upcoming episodes will break down each stage, starting with an in-depth look at Point 9: The Current State of Yoga.
As we move forward, it’s important to remain open, curious, and honest. By applying the Foundational Triad—focusing on state, relationships, and information—we can bring awareness and accountability to the realities of yoga communities.
